An Army chaplain is a spiritual leader whose influence extends beyond religious support. As an Army chaplain, you are not only a religious leader but also a counselor and a leader with a moral compass for your troops.
The Army Chaplain Corp is religiously diverse, reflecting the diversity of the Army. However, each chaplain ministers according to the tenets of his/her distinctive faith community. Unlike most officers in the Army, the chaplain begins serving as a staff officer immediately.
-Providing advice in matters pertaining to religion, morals, and morale
-Overseeing a full program of religious ministries, including workshops, counseling sessions, religious education and special events
-Officiate at official ceremonies such as military functions, funerals, and memorials
-Active Duty (Full-time)
-Army Reserve (Part-time)
-Chaplain Candidate Program*
*When in the Chaplain Candidate Program, candidates are lieutenants, not chaplains, in the Army Reserve. The program is structured to provide experiences and prepare candidates to become a fully-qualified chaplains once the requirements are met. Chaplain candidates can then accession into either Active Duty or Army Reserve.
-A clergy person* in your religious organization; ecclesiastically endorsed
-Qualified spiritually, morally, intellectually and emotionally to serve as a chaplain in the Army
-Sensitive to religious pluralism and able to provide for the free exercise of religion for all military personnel, their family members and civilians who work for the Army
-Possessing a bachelor’s degree (of any major) of no less than 120 semester hours/units
-Pursuing or possessing a graduate degree in theological or religious studies of no less than 72 semester hours/units from an institution accredited by ATS or TRACS**
-Eligible for a Secret security clearance
-Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident***
*Chaplain candidates do not have to be clergy person at the start of candidacy, but must be endorsed.
**Chaplain candidates don’t have to have started graduate degree when applying for candidacy, but must show proof of acceptance into graduate school.
***Those with permanent residency/green card are only eligible for Army Reserve (part-time).
