Job Description: Director of Youth Ministry
The Garden Church exists to multiply disciples who connect with God, belong to one another, grow in spiritual maturity, serve others, and share the gospel.
General Role Description
The most essential responsibility of the Director of Youth Ministry is to continue to grow in his or her own relationship with Jesus through personal devotions, Bible study, fellowship, and service. The Director of Youth Ministry will oversee all activities, programs, supply orders, curriculum utilized, budgets, and leadership personnel associated with the Garden Youth Ministry (or GYM) (middle & high school). As a member of the church staff, the Director of Youth Ministry will also participate in managing day-to-day church operations and assisting with general administrative duties and responsibilities within the church.
The Director of Youth Ministry will oversee or delegate* the following responsibilities. Main functions include, but are not limited to the following:
Oversee the spiritual development of the youth we encounter through worship services, ministry programs, groups, and events.
Develop strategies to implement the church's mission statement and core values.
Recruit, train, mentor and encourage the leaders/volunteers within the youth ministry.
Partner and collaborate with other leaders in developing a comprehensive vision for the youth ministry.
Develop, execute, oversee, and evaluate all programs, events, groups, and curriculum.
Relationally connect with students and provide pastoral care, mentoring, and leadership development.
Establish and manage the youth ministry budget.
Develop and maintain a system of clear communication with parents keeping them informed of ongoing activities and the spiritual growth of their children. Keep parents updated in a way that encourages partnership and involvement.
Participate in the Garden Learning Center (GLC) including, but not limited to: developing relationships with students; incorporating spiritual education within GLC; assisting with educational support; integrating GLC students into the church’s youth ministry.
Prepare quarterly and annual written ministry reports.
Attend all staff meetings & leadership meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned by or communicated through the Executive Pastor.
*Even though others may be recruited or “trained” to perform aspects of these responsibilities, the youth director will be ultimately responsible.
This position reports directly to the Executive Pastor.
Wage and Work Hours
Compensation commensurate with experience.
This position is a full-time position (40 hours a week).
Education and Experience:
Undergraduate degree or work experience equivalence in this field.
Seminary or equivalent education preferred, but not required.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in youth ministry or comparable ministry role.
Minimum educational courses for obtaining ministry credential with the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) Denomination required (to be completed on job if courses not taken).
Experience recruiting and developing volunteers, both spiritually and as solid ministry leaders.
Commitment to remaining current with trends and practices of effective youth ministries.
Knowledge and Skills:
Have a passionate heart for students with a desire to lead and equip them in developing a real, deep seated relationship with God through creative and fun weekly in-person experiences and on current social media platforms.
Demonstrated calling and passion for reaching and making disciples of youth.
Proven leadership skills.
Well-organized with good time management and project management abilities
Possess a high level of initiative and follow-through.
Possess the ability to use appropriate judgment, discretion, sensitivity, and confidentiality.
Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain healthy and motivating relationships with supervisors, co-workers, volunteers, parents and students.
Excellent verbal, written communication, and presentation skills.
Ability to counsel team members, students, and/or their parents in times of need.
Ability to create and write curriculum or find new curriculum that is engaging to students.
Ability to manage and plan a budget aligned with the goals of the church.
Mature follower of Jesus Christ, committed to the Christian faith and the mission of The Garden Church.
Considerable understanding of the Bible and Christian theology.
Regular involvement in Garden Church activities and events.
Must be an active and official Member and Servant Leader of the Garden Church.
Signed acknowledgment of Membership and Servant Leader covenants; Participation in a small group; tithing consistently; attending worship services; involvement in outreach; following Christ personally and passionately; sexual purity.
Possess a teachable heart, a humble spirit, and a positive attitude.
