Medway Community Church (MCC) is a vibrant, growing, body of believers in the beautiful, New England town of Medway, Massachusetts.  Beginning in 1750, God placed us in the Boston metro-west region, where we strive to humbly live an ancient faith in a modern world.

Introductory Information

Medway Community Church (MCC) is in search of an Assistant Pastor for Discipleship and Enfolding (i.e. guest assimilation and small-group development).  This is a full-time, professional position.

Church Overview

MCC is a healthy and steadily growing church family of 450 average, weekly, in-person attendance  (post-COVID) across two Sunday worship services.  In addition, we welcome approximately 100 unique devices on livestream each week.

Our 8-person ministry staff includes six full-time positions (three pastors including this role) and two part-time director positions; additionally, support staff includes two part-time custodians, an assistant children’s contractor role, and one current intern.
MCC is graciously Reformed in theology; elder-led and staff-driven in polity.
The church family is a suburban, New England congregation in Boston Metro West; majority middle and upper-middle class.  It is a multi-generational church with a large number in the 30-50 age range, a substantive group aged 60+, and a growing demographic in their 20’s.
Approximately 80 students are active in the Junior High and Senior High programs and 125 children are active in MCC Kids.
The preaching team practices expository preaching.  Occasionally we will include textual series in which we explore what the Bible says about specific topics/issues.  For example, in  2020, we focused on a multi-pronged initiative for the teaching and practice of racial unity.
Educationally, most adult members hold degrees in higher education.
While perhaps half of the congregation is politically conservative, there is a broad spectrum of political perspectives.
The church campus includes our primary facility (with a recently refurbished 350-seat sanctuary), office building, and youth director’s manse – all unified by a recently completed parking expansion.

Desired Qualities

Characteristics for the ideal candidate may include…

Predisposed to action: catalytic and energetic in leadership, outgoing in personality, with gifts of hospitality. Extends grace in relationships.
Reformed in theology with a Master of Divinity degree or similar.
Experience within a healthy, small-group ministry environment.
Tolerant of New England sports.  Also, comfortable in a laid-back culture that values a sense of humor.
Three years or more in a paid, local church, staff position.  Track record of working effectively      within a team.
Tech savvy, with moderate to strong skill in graphic arts.
Age 25-39.
Gifted in teaching, with moderate to strong skill in expository preaching.
Holds to a pro-life, whole-life view of the unborn and the church’s responsibility to the vulnerable.
Holds to a traditional and Biblical view of marriage while affirming the worth, dignity, and imago dei of our same sex attracted neighbors.
Holds to a complementarian position while affirming a high view of women’s role in local church ministry.
Compensation & Benefits

Medway Community Church (MCC) is committed to appropriately compensating its pastors and staff.

Base compensation range is commensurate with experience and education.

Job Description

Medway Community Church

Assistant Pastor for Discipleship & Enfolding

Primary Purpose:

Develop and lead pastoral, shepherding ministries that enfold guests and disciple Christians while proactively developing lay leaders, teachers, and disciplers.


“…to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”  (Ephesians 4:11-13)

Weekly Commitment:

This is a full-time, professional position (45-50 hours per week).  Expected office hours each week are:

Monday – Thursday:  8:30am-2:30pm
Friday:  Day Off (or 1/2-day work-at-home if no Sunday evening programming or weekend events)
Saturday:  Day Off (or special events)
Sunday:   7:30am-noon, evening as needed

The balance of the weekly commitment will be covered by evening and weekend meetings/events, plus working from home.


General Overview

Maintain a vital relationship with Jesus Christ, showing evidence of this through the practice of spiritual disciplines, dependence on the Holy Spirit, and the exhibition of spiritual fruit.
Actively participate in the worship and community of the church.
Generate and execute ideas that will better enfold new guests into the life of the church.
Develop and lead a combination of programs and initiatives that will assist adult members and attendees in their Gospel growth, while encouraging greater involvement in the life of the church.
Oversee the recruitment and training of volunteers to lead guest outreach, community groups, adult discipleship classes, and mentoring teams.

Guest Enfolding

The task of overseeing various guest enfolding initiatives will likely include, but need not be limited to:

Personal Outreach:  Intentionally develop relationships with new guests, and equip others to do likewise, through the practice of hospitality.  The goal is connecting guests to ministries, community groups, and families that will best fit spiritual and relational needs while providing an outlet for service to others.
Connect Team:  In partnership with the Director of Women’s Ministries, train and lead this Sunday morning ministry tasked with the welcome of new and returning guests to MCC.  The Connect Team currently includes the parking team, foyer & sanctuary teams, and coffee team.
Inquirers Course:  Coordinate invites, setup, logistics, and teaching for our 5-6-week, semiannual adult class for guests.
Website & Planning Center Management:  In partnership with the office manager, maintain current digital platforms and develop additional ones as needed.
Larger Group Guest Gatherings:  Create occasional environments (e.g. luncheons, brief Sunday meet-n-greets, etc) that introduce newer MCC guests to selected MCC staff and established families.
In-House Meals:  Help connect guests to MCC hosts who have been identified as possessing strong gifts of hospitality.


The task of overseeing various discipleship initiatives will likely include, but need not be limited to:

Community Groups:  Oversee, resource, and train leaders of Community Groups throughout the church family.  In addition to direct oversight of co-ed groups, coordinate with Men’s Ministry (men’s groups) and Women’s Ministry (women’s groups) to expand group reach and effectiveness.  Develop an ethos of “small-group as first responder” within MCC’s overall Culture of Care.
Adult Classes:  In coordination with the Adult Discipleship Committee, develop and lead a multi-tiered, educational program for adults that ministers to the various levels of spiritual development found throughout the adult church family.
Semi-Regular Preaching:  Participate in the MCC preaching team with at least 6-7 Sunday opportunities over the course of the year.
Spring Seminar:  In coordination with the Adult Discipleship Committee, design and present our every-other-year Spring seminar for adult discipleship.
Mentoring Teams:  Develop and initiate a self-propagating mentoring structure whereby an initial team (or teams) of individuals is discipled by a mature Christian over a period of 1-2 years. These will subsequently commit to lead a discipling team of their own.

Coordination and Communication

Serve as staff liaison to the Adult Discipleship Committee, leveraging the group’s time, expertise, and service to further expand enfolding and discipleship capabilities at MCC.
Attend all weekly staff meetings, all weekly meetings with direct reports, and Elder meetings/retreats when requested.
Attend all Adult Discipleship Meetings.

Additional Duties & Reporting Structure

Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Pastor.
The Assistant Pastor is accountable to, and will regularly meet with, the Senior Pastor.
Oversee the Director of Youth Ministries & Technology
Oversee the Director of Women’s Ministries
Oversee the volunteer Graphics Team, developing sermon graphics (to supplement Sunday teaching) as well as various event slides (Facebook, weekly electronic newsletter, website, Sunday screens, etc).
