Pastor at Kenilworth Presbyterian Church
Portland, Oregon
About the job
KENILWORTH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
PORTLAND, OREGON
3/5-TIME STATED SUPPLY PASTOR
We know you’re out there, future pastor of Kenilworth Presbyterian Church in Portland, Oregon, and we are eager for you to join us!
KPC is nestled on a corner in a semi-urban, “close-in” neighborhood of Southeast Portland that’s bordered by friendly residents and a few blocks from both an elementary school and senior-living facility with which we have a warm relationship, as well as great restaurants, food carts, pubs and coffee shops (of course), a large park and Trader Joe’s!
We are a small congregation that serves the Lord with gusto.
On Sunday mornings, we gather for a worship service that has just the right balance of formal and informal. It includes music under the direction of a gifted leader and a children’s sermon delivered by a talented middle-schooler. The service is always followed by a congenial coffee hour. Our Presbyterian Women group meets monthly for Bible study, and its members double as needed in the role of deacons. We also hold a weekly prayer meeting via Zoom.
We sponsor a large food pantry called Groceries for Grout (so named because it is based at nearby Grout Elementary School) that serves hundreds of families, seniors and community members each week, and sponsor a neighborhood preschool with a master’s-level teacher and 24 students. We prepare meals for the Wy’East Homeless Veterans Shelter in Southeast Portland twice a month.
We share our physical space with Girl Scouts, Narcotics Anonymous and Wellbriety (Indigenous) groups, and we host special events, most recently a dinner cooked by and benefiting an Afghani refugee.
The church is a hub in other ways as well. We are an Earth Care Congregation, and we accept and recycle plastic and (mountains of) Styrofoam that we transport to a recycling center. We also have a Little Free Library and even a dog-waste station.
But we aren’t satisfied with the status quo. We are very open to new ideas, service programs and spiritual growth in directions we have not yet contemplated.
We have 35 active parishioners, and while we range in age from 1-95 years, most of us are between 45 and 75. We would love to increase (even double) our attendance in the next five years, bringing in individuals and families of all ages.
Our longtime (8½ years) pastor retired in September 2019. As we were gathering our thoughts about future leadership, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down everything. Still we kept going — becoming quite adept using Zoom — with a stated supply pastor for one year followed by weekly pulpit-supply pastors. Now that we are meeting again in person (members can still participate online), we are more than ready to welcome a new pastor.
So what are we looking for? A part-time (60%; 24 hours/week) stated supply pastor who will participate enthusiastically in the life of the church and guide us in planning for the future, with a commitment to spend a significant amount of their work week in our church building.
What do we offer?
n Friendly, fun, hardworking, open-minded, positive parishioners who love the Lord and want to share His love.
n A competitive salary, medical benefits and a generous vacation and study leave package.
n A financially fit church with faith in our future.
We can’t wait to meet you!
