Children’s Music Director at Irvine Canaan Christian Community Church
Irvine, CA

According to Bright Horizons , “Music ignites all areas of child development and skills for school readiness, including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It helps the body and the mind work together. Exposing children to music during early development helps them learn the sounds and meanings of words. Dancing to music helps children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self-expression. For children and adults, music helps strengthen memory skills.”

Part of the mandates of Irvine Canaan Christian Community Church is to build a vibrant and growing Children Ministry in the City of Irvine. We intend to use MUSIC as part of our strategies to attract young families in the area expanding God’s kingdom.

In depth technicalities of making the above work:

Christmas musical:

-- rehearsals usually start in September

-- adaptation of the script as needed (for gendered parts, or splitting/adding things to make them easier/better for the kids)

-- holding auditions for both singing and acting

-- extra rehearsals for actors

-- blocking scenes, how do you want this scene to look like on stage

-- choreography on musical numbers

-- costume ideas / vision, props

-- prepare musical tracks for ease of performance (I had to take all the tracks from the CD and do some audio editing/gluing because otherwise the poor sound guys would've had to know when and where to stop for each song, and there are usually over 60 rehearsal tracks)

-- extra dress rehearsals as needed

-- have a good idea of your choir members and pick appropriate musical difficulty for the following musical (generally pick by June; length and complexity depends on the students you will have)

--recruit stage moms to help

General performances:

-- approx. 4-5 performances for adult services (outside of Christmas musical, also depending on if there are combined/special music things)

-- record accompaniment parts

-- transpose as needed to fit children's range

-- 2-part harmony for older students (sometimes, even 3-part)

-- basic choreography for K-1 kids

General rehearsals:

-- warmups and routines to get students ready

-- positive reinforcement for desired behaviors

-- good rapport with students and behavior management

-- demonstration of good vocal technique and habits (as developmentally appropriate for children -- i.e., less vibrato for younger voices)

Praise music:

-- age-appropriate songs / lyrics  (we have about... 120+ songs in rotation throughout the year)

-- accompany self on piano and/or guitar

-- weekly slideshow with lyrics and group prayer

-- basic knowledge of soundboard and sound equipment
