  • Position Title: Associate Pastor
  • Reporting: Reports to the Lead Pastor
  • Classification: Full Time / Exempt


Position Summary: The Associate Pastor will partner with the Lead Pastor, Staff and Lay Leadership in nurturing and developing relationships, structures and spiritual practices that cultivate an emotionally and spiritually healthy church community where people can courageously find and follow Jesus.




  • Leadership and oversight of small group ministry; casting vision for, implementing, and modeling healthy group dynamics. Develop and facilitate leadership training.
  • Continue development of language and rhythms of Spiritual Formation within the HOPE Covenant culture and community.
  • Take part in teaching rotation for midweek Bible study and/or classes, groups (FPU, Parenting, Marriage, Alpha, Divorce Care, etc.)
  • Assist Lead Pastor in preaching for Sunday morning worship as needed.
  • Work with Lead Pastor in leadership of and investing in the emotional & spiritual health of the staff, seeking to nurture, develop and encourage their spiritual growth and development.


  • Assist in development and coordination of missional outward focus strategies providing neighborhood and community blessing, and create inroads to relationship.


  • Facilitate newcomer follow-up and connections mechanism.
  • Member of Pastoral Care Team, helping coordinate on-call rotation and appointments, making pastoral care visits and overseeing the Benevolence Team.


  • Development, training and oversight of a Deacon Team to mobilize lay ministry.
  • Organize and facilitate volunteer appreciation events.



  • Oversight of various areas of Church operations, including leadership and direction of Facilities (including overseeing maintenance staff and volunteer teams), and support for Landscape Teams.
  • Leadership in areas of building improvements and initiatives, human resources, recruiting, budgeting revamping, etc.
  • Advance development of healthy systems/structures that support the life of what God is growing at HOPE: structures which serve people, not vice versa.
  • Develop and implement organizational communication strategy, troubleshooting existing systems, email updates, website, social media, Sunday announcements.
  • Assist Lead Pastor in ensuring vision alignment within and between ministries, curriculums, methodologies, and relationships.
  • Other events and duties as required.


  • Participate in weekly pastoral staff meetings, staff development sessions (currently Tuesdays 9:30AM-noon), and collaborate with the Lead Pastor and staff on church-wide strategic direction.
  • Meet regularly with the Lead Pastor to discuss ministry progress, coaching, development, and support for other personal needs.
  • Regularly participate in monthly Elder’s meetings (usually 3rd Tuesdays at 7PM) to discuss the progress of ministry areas.



Preferred: Master’s Degree, preferably in Biblical Studies, Spiritual Formation or Leadership (or equivalent experience)


Essential Experience:

3+ years of experience in full-time vocational ministry


Preferred Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in managing and supervising staff, and/or 3 years of experience in recruiting, managing and supervising volunteers
  • Experience serving in the above areas in a larger (300+) church
  • Proven track record in multi-generational ministry
  • Proven track record in building effective teams

Essential Qualities:

  • Our first call is to ‘be with Jesus’. Our ‘doing’ for Jesus in ministry flows out of our ‘being’ with Jesus. (The transformation that flows from our intimacy with Christ flows naturally as children of God.) That shared value is of utmost priority.
  • A personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and evidence of living under the guidelines for leaders found in I Timothy 3: 1-7 and Titus 1.
  • Demonstrate the growth and practices of a humble servant leader
  • Spiritually mature Christian with consistent and long-term track record of Christ-like behavior and a heart for service in ministry.
  • Passion and enthusiasm for discipleship and spiritual development. This person must have a contagiously strong desire to bring others along as you “enjoy the journey”.
  • Emotional and relational maturity.
  • Alignment with HOPE’s statement of faith, vision, values and leadership (see the ABOUT HOPE section of the website at: )
  • Willing to meet membership requirements and make HOPE Covenant their family’s home church (if applicable)
  • Effective verbal and written communicator (including social media).
  • Collaborative team leader who motivates and encourages others.
  • Relatable/Personable - can authentically and appropriately share about struggles, challenges or problems.
  • Committed to the priorities of the Evangelical Covenant Church through the ministries of the Pacific Southwest Conference and the denomination.
