Director of Spiritual Formation & Community Life at
110 Valley Park Rd, Phoenixville, PA 19460

We don’t just want someone to develop more programs. We need someone to help us build a culture of spiritual formation. We want to become a church where life transformation is normal, but we’re finding that this requires someone who is singularly focused on working this into everything we do. If this is something that gets your blood pumping, read on or jump straight to our site:

Your job would be to curate, design, construct, and maintain a spiritual formation pathway that invites people into increasing depths of spiritual community and leverages the spiritual gifts of our congregation to help us become a church where life transformation is normal.

You would work directly with the Lead Pastor to help us live out our vision of becoming a church where life transformation is normal.  Moses, Jesus, & the Apostle Paul often describe life as a journey with God. We are called by God to walk the path, keep in step, follow Jesus, and take the narrow way. Your aim would be to help light the way, creating clear steps, guideposts, & mile markers for our congregation as they follow Jesus. Practically speaking, this breaks down into four major areas of responsibility: Spiritual Pathway Architect, Spiritual Formation Curator, Champion of Groups, and Coach/Caretaker. If this sounds good, read on.

Here is bit more detail about these areas of responsibility:

Spiritual Pathway Architect

  • Work with the Lead Pastor to design and construct a spiritual formation pathway (courses, experiences, methodologies, etc.) that will help individuals and families at every stage of development take the next step in their walk with God. This pathway also needs to take seriously the major spiritual roadblocks (e.g., emotional health, addictions, busyness, etc.) to growth.
  • Recruit, equip, and support champions for every step in the pathway.
  • Create regular “onramps” for our people to get on to the spiritual pathway.
  • Work with Lead Pastor and Staff to align the pathway with the preaching and ministry calendars.
  • Develop a team of guides/spiritual directors to invite our people discern the next step in their walk with God.

Spiritual Formation Curator

  • Seek out content, environments, & methodologies that foster the spiritual growth
  • Continually seek to make GVF’s spiritual formation process better through hypothesizing, testing, and evaluating how varying factors (content, methodologies, etc.) work in our church/community context
  • Regularly measure & report both the lead and lag metrics for spiritual growth

Champion of Groups (& Spiritual Friendship)

  • Recruit, equip, and shepherd group leaders
  • Work with Next Steps Director to integrate newcomers into appropriate groups
  • Guard, approve, & provide materials used for groups
  • Align groups with identified spiritual practices and beliefs that are catalysts for spiritual growth
  • Work with Lead Pastor to incorporate a spiritual growth pathway into the life of Connect groups
  • Maintain the pulse of groups, identifying leaders and groups in need

Coach and Caretaker

  • Create a regular cadence for finding, recruiting, & developing new champions for every step of the pathway, training existing pathway leaders, and encouraging all our leaders to live out the spiritual formation process in their own lives
  • Create practical, emotional, and spiritual support systems for our pathway leaders
  • Maintain and improve the pathway with each round of programming

Bonus Features. You don’t have to do any of these, but we would consider any/all of these an added bonus: training in spiritual formation; passion/ability to train in personal evangelism; proven ability to do leadership development; ability to do one arm push-ups. (Just kidding about the last one.)

The type of person we are looking for:

  • Has a passion for connecting people into the life of the church (big “C” & little “c” church)
  • Rather try something and fail than sit around writing yet another plan
  • Probably owns some marked up copies of some books by Dallas Willard, Eugene Peterson, Ruth Haley Barton, Richard Foster, Pete Scazzero, James Bryan Smith, and the like
  • Enjoys reading about, thinking about, and talking about spiritual formation
  • Loves to discover how people are gifted and support them in this gifting
  • Would rather work with a team than go it alone
  • Takes satisfaction in seeing people deeply connected, using their gifts, & growing in the church
  • Likes the idea of meeting new challenges every few months
  • Other people want to be part of what you are doing
  • Is sensitive to others, but does not shy away from having hard conversations

If you still want to apply, then we really want you to apply!

Your salary will be commensurate to your education and experience. (You won’t get rich, but we take good care of our staff.)

Benefits include paid time off, 403b retirement contributions, & your very own GVF t-shirt.
