About the job
If you're looking at this job posting, it's probably a given that you love children and youth and their families, and young adults. It's probably a given that you love watching them "catch" the big idea of God in Jesus! So, why Northwest Arkansas? It's one of the fastest growing areas in the country. It offers tons in the way of natural beauty that can be accessed easily via bike trails, hiking trails, water craft rentals, etc. Because it's growing, there is still this intense dichotomy of urban sprawl right next to cattle pasture. And, with the anticipation of doubling from 500,000 to 1 million residents in the next 15 years, the amenities of education, live entertainment, diverse and abundant food, retail, medical, and business options continues to burgeon. Northwest Arkansas is an exciting place to begin or begin again.
FPC Springdale is a medium-size congregation located in the Northwest Arkansas Industrial Corridor, much like "America's Technology Highway" along Route 128 in Massachusetts. The corridor begins at its southern tip with Fayetteville - home to the University of Arkansas; next is Springdale - home to Tyson Foods; then Rogers - home to J.B. Hunt Trucking; and culminating at the northern tip in Bentonville - home to Wal-Mart. Each urban area has a First Presbyterian Church, and each church has a unique personality. Springdale's First Church has been known as the "blue-collar" Church of the Corridor; but that label may be misleading. The resources, human and financial, are significant.
We continue to possess a diverse age demographic while still presenting as homogenous ethnically. That said, this church has hosted a Latino Ministry for over 25 years. We still host a GED program distinctly for Latinos, who make up a large percentage of the Tyson Foods workforce.
We have recently identified as "The Passionate Moderate Middle." We recognize that the core values which led us to identify as such may place us in a powerful position in the near future as the culture craves the voice of the Moderate Middle to help us move beyond our stalemates. We are beginning to see ourselves as "the adults in the room with the institutional memory of how to find 'the coveted third way'" while being respectful and honoring each person's dignity as a human made in the image of God.
