The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, Agape House Lutheran/Episcopal Joint Ministry at SDSU, and St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church San Diego are collaborating on a creative new ministry opportunity: Assistant Rector at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, and Campus Missioner at Agape House. This full-time position will spend ½- time devoted to the campus ministry at Agape House at San Diego State University, and ½- time to the duties of Assistant Rector at St. Dunstan’s.

CAMPUS MISSIONER

AGAPE HOUSE, A JOINT LUTHERAN/EPISCOPAL MINISTRY AT SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY

The Campus Missioner will complement the role of Assistant Rector at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, San Diego.  Agape House at SDSU is a joint Lutheran/Episcopal Ministry since 1950, incorporated in 1962 and centered in the core values of radical welcome, rooted in faith, justice and mercy, and growth in community.  The current Agape vision is to build an evolving space for campus ministry and affordable student housing of 50 students in intentional community at one of the top ten most diverse universities in the country as it expands from 34,000 to 50,000 students.

The ideal candidate will:

Assist the Agape House staff to design, coordinate, and engage students in creative community expressions bridging from arts, music, etc. to spiritual and communal practices.
Support and extend SDSU campus outreach to engage new students one to one, in community gatherings and activities, and via online media
Assist the Campus Pastor to offer pastoral care to students, staff, and faculty
Assist the Agape House Board and staff in donor relations, fundraising, and organizational support as needed
Coordinate diocesan collaborations in campus ministry and young adult ministries, representing campus ministry at diocesan conventions and bridging campus life to parish life and other area-wide activities, including occasional congregational outreach

ASSISTANT RECTOR

ST. DUNSTAN’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH SAN DIEGO

St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church seeks a Priest to serve as ½ -time Assistant Rector of a thriving parish in the heart of San Diego. St. Dunstan’s is located less than four miles from San Diego State University in the growing suburban neighborhoods of San Carlos and Del Cerro. The congregation is seeking to reach out to and serve the surrounding diverse population of families and college students and is looking to expand ministries in these areas.  With the addition of a creative Priest who thrives in diversity, finds joy in building new relationships, and has a passion for evangelism and outreach, St. Dunstan’s hope to continue to grow as well as deepen its roots in the community.

The ideal candidate will:

Serve as the St. Dunstan’s Youth Group chaplain.
Work with the St. Dunstan’s Youth director to plan and execute a multi-faceted parish youth group program.
Work with the rector to provide council to those concerned about their religious life and beliefs, leading them to an understanding of their own ministry.
Serve as support and resource for pastoral ministry programs and coordinate pastoral care.
At the direction of the Rector, administer the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Eucharist, officiate at appropriate rites of marriage and burial.
Work with the Rector to develop and provide spiritual leadership and motivation, delivering sermons with Biblical emphasis which are relevant, provoking, and challenging.
Work with the church's organizations, motivating them to become a diverse community that is open and caring to one another and to the others in the parish.
With the Rector, learn how to manage the parish office and parish record keeping.
Participate in and attend all parish staff meetings.
Attend all Vestry meetings. Assist the Rector in informing and updating the Vestry on ongoing ministries and programs.
Inspire the congregation to join in mission through preaching, teaching and by their living example.
Actively develop new outreach and community-engagement opportunities in order to seek and invite those in the neighborhood into relationship with Jesus and community.

Skills/Experience

Ordained Episcopal priest. Transitional deacons will also be considered.
An Innovative thinker and a strong leader
A collaborative, personable self-starter with demonstrated experience in the work of evangelism, mission development, building new communities, and community outreach
Willing to pioneer innovative approaches to developing communities
Ability to form and cultivate partnerships with other sacred and secular community organizations
Has a passion for service and social justice issues
Proficiency with digital technology and modern communications, including online learning platforms and social media
Strong writing skills, including ability to access, understand and share stories via multiple platforms
Experience in campus/university ministries, other social work/non-profit organizations, and/or community organizing
Master of Divinity degree or equivalent theological training
